In a small saucepan, warm the milk over low heat until it is just warm to the touch (around 110°F). Remove from heat and sprinkle the yeast over the milk. Add a pinch of sugar and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the melted butter, egg, and the yeast mixture.
Using a wooden spoon, mix until the dough begins to come together. Then, knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl and cover with a kitchen towel. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them in a greased baking dish or on a baking sheet.
Cover the shaped rolls with the kitchen towel and allow them to rise again for about 30 minutes.
Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter if desired. Serve warm.
