Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix together flour, baking powder, salt, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice in a large bowl.
Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in 1 cup sugar.
In a separate bowl, beat eggs, then add milk and vanilla. Pour into the flour mixture and stir gently.
Fold in sliced apples. Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and pour batter in. Sprinkle remaining 2 tablespoons sugar on top.
Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
For the custard sauce, heat whole milk and salt gently. Whisk egg yolks and sugar until smooth. Slowly pour warm milk into yolk mixture, then return to saucepan and whisk until thickened.
Serve cake slices with warm custard drizzled over.
