Equipment

  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 rolling pin
  • 1 baking sheet
  • 1 parchment paper
  • 1 clean kitchen towel
  • 1 small saucepan

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter softened (for filling)
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley finely chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh basil finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (for filling)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the melted butter, egg, and the yeast mixture.
  • Mix the ingredients until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 to 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • Meanwhile, prepare the filling. In a small saucepan, melt the softened butter over low heat. Add the minced garlic, parsley, basil, salt, and pepper. Stir until well combined and the garlic becomes fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about ½ inch thick.
  • Spread the garlic-herb butter mixture evenly over the dough.
  • Starting from one end, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal slices.
  • Place the slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them slightly apart. Cover with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake the rolls for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For added flavor, consider sprinkling some grated Parmesan cheese over the filling before rolling. These rolls can be stored in an airtight container for a couple of days but are best enjoyed fresh and warm.
