Main ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
  • cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 brioche buns
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

Instructions

  • Melt the butter in a skillet pan over medium heat. Once melted, add the ground beef and cook and crumble until no pink remains and the meat is lightly crispy browned.
  • Sprinkle the garlic powder over the ground beef, stir well, and cook for 30 seconds until evenly distributed and fragrant.
  • Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the ground beef, while stirring constantly, to coat the meat evenly. Cook and stir for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  • Add the condensed French onion soup, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, onion powder, dried thyme, kosher salt, and black pepper. Stir until smooth and fully combined.
  • Simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sloppy joe mixture becomes glossy, saucy, and thick enough to mound slightly on the back of a spoon. Use a slotted spoon to serve the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom half of a brioche bun. Place a slice of provolone cheese over top, and then add the top bun. Let the cheese melt slightly and serve warm.

Notes

Other sliced cheese options include gruyere cheese, mozzarella cheese, muenster cheese, or swiss cheese. I love using toasted buns when serving sloppy joes because it prevents them from getting soggy and gives some toasty texture to the sandwiches. I spread softened butter on each half, place them onto a baking sheet, and then broil until toasted brown.
